First Doses First (Overview)

Introduction

In the current phase of the pandemic, most countries have insufficient supply of vaccines. As long as this is the case, it is paramount to efficiently distribute the available vaccines to maximize their impact.

On idea which has been successfully adopted by several regions (UK, Quebec and others) is to give as many people as possible a first dose of the vaccine, as even a single dose is enough to prevent severe cases of COVID (more about this can be found here).

The basic argument boils down to this:

  • One dose of the vaccine reduces symptomatic cases by approximately 85%.
  • Two doses reduce symptomatic cases by >90% (the exact numbers differ between the various vaccines (AZ, Moderna, Pfizer, …) and age groups, but this is roughly what they are)
  • Assume that you have 2 doses - you can either give one to your grandmother and one to your grandfather or both of them to your grandmother
    • In the first case, you prevent that both of them die but they might get a mild cough (with 15% chance).
    • In the other case you reduce the chance that your grandmother gets a cough by another 10% but you let your grandfather die (or at least wait a few months in a pandemic until it’s his turn to get vaccinated).

Extending this work, data & source code

The methods I employed could be used to analyse other countries & regions as well. If there’s good data (such as the one published by the Austrian Government with it’s eVaccination program) it can be done in a few minutes.

The complete source code of my work as well as the complete data set is published on GitHub. Data that is not contained will be automatically downloaded, parsed & prepared when the code is run (data_loading.py contains all of these procedures).
